LENSES OR NEW GLASSES
New lenses or new glasses? An honest answer.
When your glasses stop doing their job, there are two ways out: put new lenses in the frame you already own, or buy a complete new pair. Both make sense in the right situation, and the answer depends mostly on one thing: the state of your frame.
FrameLens only does the first, so we have an obvious interest. Here is the comparison as our optician explains it at the counter, including the cases where a new pair is the better buy.
| Feature | New lenses in your frame | New glasses |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | The lenses only | A frame and lenses |
| Frame you love | Kept | Replaced |
| Turnaround | 48 hours standard | Depends on the shop |
| Fit | Already adjusted to your face | A new frame to adjust |
| When it is the better choice | Your frame is in good shape | Your frame is broken, the wrong size, or you want a new style |

When keeping your frame makes sense
A frame that fits well is worth more than its price tag: it sits at the right height, does not pinch, and has already been adjusted to your face. If yours is still in good shape and you still enjoy wearing it, new lenses give you new optics without starting that process again.
It is also the natural choice for frames that cannot be bought again: discontinued models, vintage pieces, bespoke frames or a pair with a story. And because you pay for lenses only, the budget goes into the part you see through: a better design, a thinner index or a better coating.
When buying new glasses is the better choice
Sometimes a new pair is simply the right call, and we say so. A cracked or broken frame, hinges worn loose, or a bridge that has been bent and repaired too many times will not become sound again with new lenses.
Size matters too: if the frame has always slipped, pinched or sat too wide, new lenses will not fix it. And wanting a new look is a perfectly good reason on its own. In those cases, choose your new frame wherever you like; if you later want new lenses in it, we can fit them.
What our optician checks before cutting
Before any lens is cut, your frame is inspected: the rims, the hinges and screws, and on rimless or semi-rimless frames, the drill holes or the nylon thread. If our optician judges a frame too fragile to re-lens safely, our optician declines the job and you are refunded in full before anything is touched.
Compatibility is handled when you order: full-rim, semi-rimless and rimless frames each take different lens materials, and the order flow only offers combinations that are safe for your frame type. Your prescription is verified by a licensed optician too, before cutting.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Is it cheaper to replace lenses than buy new glasses?
Usually, because you only pay for the lenses: there is no frame in the price. How much you save depends on the lens you choose and on what a new frame would have cost you. Our lens price page shows real examples, each beside its official price, and the order flow gives your exact total before you pay.
Can any frame take new lenses?
Most can: full-rim, semi-rimless and rimless frames, in metal, acetate or titanium. The exception is a frame too damaged or fragile to survive cutting and fitting. Our optician checks every frame first, and if a frame is declined, you are refunded in full before anything is touched.
How long does it take?
Standard lenses are ready within 48 hours of your frame reaching our DIFC atelier. EGMA and Rodenstock lenses take up to 72 hours, and special orders, such as very high powers, up to 10 days. The timing is shown before you pay.
Will my glasses feel the same with new lenses?
The frame will: same frame, same fit on your face. The view changes with your new prescription and the lens you choose. If the correction does not feel right, bring the glasses back with your old lenses: we check the fitting and the correction, and if the error is ours, we remake the lenses free of charge.
